Glucose Tolerance in Women Receiving an Ovulatory Suppressant.

چکیده
A high percentage of women receiving 5 mg. of norethynodrel with mestranol in cyclic fashion for contraception have decreased glucose tolerance. Ten per cent have elevated fasting levels, 20 per cent have elevated one-hour levels and 46 per cent have elevated two-hour levels (greater than our normal mean + 2 standard deviations of 105, 156 and 113 mg./lOO ml., respectively). The incidence of abnormal glucose tolerance is greater in women with a family history of diabetes than in those without a history. It seems reasonable to associate the change in glucose tolerance with the "pseudo-pregnancy" produced by the drug. Many women who have decreased glucose tolerance during natural pregnancy later become permanently diabetic. If this is true of those women with decreased glucose during drug treatment, then this response may identify the prediabetic.

Endocrine and metabolic effects of rosiglitazone in non-obese women with polycystic ovary disease.
We hypothesized that the administration of rosiglitazone, an insulin-sensitizing agent of the thiazolidinedione class, would improve the ovulatory dysfunction, hirsutism, hyperandrogenemia, and hyperinsulinemia of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. Forty women with PCOS and impaired glucose tolerance test (IGT) were randomly assigned to the 8-month treatment with rosiglitazone at either...
متن کاملI-40: Relationship Between Abnormal GlucoseTolerance Test and History of Previous Recurrent Miscarriages, and Beneficial Effecof Metformin in These Patients: A Prospective Clinical Study
Background: To determine the incidence of an abnormal glucose tolerance test in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion and whether metformin would safely reduce the rate of first trimester spontaneous abortions in patients without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as well as with PCOS and an abnormal glucose tolerance test. Materials and Methods: Patients with a history of recurrent sponta...
متن کاملThe relationship between pregnancy weight gain and impaired glucose tolerance test
Impaired glucose tolerance has several adverse effects on growing fetus. In this study we evaluated the effect of excessive weight gain during pregnancy on the risk of glucose intolerance in pregnant women. A case-control study was conducted through which the glucose tolerance status after 100 gram oral glucose intake was compared between 60 pregnant women with maximum 10 weeks of gestation and...
متن کاملMetabolic syndrome in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): lower prevalence in southern Italy than in the USA and the influence of criteria for the diagnosis of PCOS.
OBJECTIVE Metabolic syndrome (MBS) is a common disorder and is thought to be extremely prevalent in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In the USA the prevalence of MBS in PCOS has been reported to be as high as 43-46% using Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) criteria. Because of differences in diet, lifestyle and genetic factors, we postulated that the prevalence of MBS might not be as high in ...
متن کاملMyo-inositol in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: a novel method for ovulation induction.
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is often characterized by chronic oligo- or anovulation (usually manifested as oligo- or amenorrhea), and hyperandrogenism. In addition, 30-40% of PCOS women have impaired glucose tolerance, and a defect in the insulin signaling pathway (inositol-containing phosphoglycan mediators) seems to be implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. PCOS...
